Assistant Professor, Research at University of Michigan

  • Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • Duration: 2012-07 to 2015-03
  • Description: • Aging influences epigenetic marks and susceptibility to different diseases. Demonstrated that changes in DNA methylation in-utero, delay the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis plaque, and associated inflammation in progeny (F1) mice. We are working on targeting these epigenetically modifiable genes in the search of a novel therapy for these diseases. • Links between aging, immune senescence and susceptibility to autoimmunity and cancer. 1. Investigating a mechanism to explain the paradoxical relationship between aging and inflammation, where the number of regulatory T cells (Tregs) increases with age, yet there is increased (rather than decreased) inflammation. This will lead to translational studies focused on modulating Treg function to treat cancer/inflammatory diseases in the elderly. 2. Studying how aging affects dendritic cell (DC)-mediated anti-tumor surveillance. This work defines the mechanism of age-dependent alteration of DC function, and tests ways to improve DC function and DC vaccine design against various cancers.

Research Investigator at University of Michigan

  • Location: Ann Arbor, MI
  • Duration: 2007-07 to 2012-06
  • Description: • T cells in the regulation of auto-immune and CNS diseases. Identified temporal regulation of T-cell mediated inflammatory response as a mechanism that balances the beneficial and pathogenic role of astrocytes in CNS injury. Demonstrated, that glutathione synthesis and γ-glutamyl pathways, that are essential for T cell activation, are suppressed by Treg cells. The finding opens a new avenue of research for future therapies of conditions ranging from autoimmune to organ transplants to cancer.
