How can AI tutors be designed to support learning rather than shortcutting it? In this session, Jérôme Brender (EPFL), will examine how undergraduate students learn with AI tutors in robotics and computer science courses. Across multiple design iterations, he investigated how features such as course-grounded retrieval (RAG), Socratic questioning, and real-time prompt feedback, and debate chatbot, shape students’ engagement, prompting behavior, and learning outcomes. His focus was on how AIcan help students better understand course concepts and become more reflective and effective users of AI tools. Jérôme Brender will discuss his findings, and provide insights into designing AIthat foster critical thinking and support sustainable learning practices.
