The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) is a nationally recognized physician multi-specialty certifying body in the United States, providing board certification to both allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) physicians in various medical specialties. ABPAS administrative offices are located in Tampa, Florida. ABPS employs full time executive, managerial, and administrative staff to respond to consumer and regulatory questions about our certification as well as to ensure the effective use of resources. We provide Diplomates with administrative support and a wide range of substantive medical and scientific educational programs. ABPS is the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. (AAPS). AAPS is a 501 (c) (6) not-for-profit organization first organized in 1950 for the purpose of providing a clinically recognized mechanism for specialty certification for physicians who had obtained advanced training in various areas of medical specialty.

The Academy of Medicine was formed over 100 years ago. Prior to this there had been medical societies; each catering for a different branch of medicine but they overlapped one another. For many years wide-ranging discussion had been held on how best to bring these bodies together so that they would have the advantage of union yet preserve their independence. In the event a solution was found. In November 1882 in the Royal College of Surgeons an Academy was formed by the amalgamation of the four main medical societies – the Dublin Society of Surgeons, the Medical Society of the College of Physicians, the Pathological Society and the Dublin Obstetrical Society. Instead of a loose federation, the founding fathers, with great imagination, created a completely new and dignified body – an academic version of the Royal Colleges. The Academy was to consist of a President and Council, Fellows, Members and Student Associates and the founding Societies became Sections of the Academy. The Presidency is regarded as one of the great offices in Irish medicine. Since 1882 there have been 48 Presidents all of them leaders of the profession and all lending their time and talents to furthering the interests of the Academy. The Presidential term was formerly three years; it is now two years and there is no provision for a second term. At present there are 23 sections covering many disciplines. At present there are over 1200 Fellows/members/Associate Members of the Academy. Fellows are elected at the Council or Committee meetings and have all the privileges of Fellows - attending and speaking at meetings, voting at elections, receiving the Irish Journal of Medical Science and being eligible for election to office. Most of the leaders of the profession have taken their turn as Secretary and President of their particular Section and contribute to the meetings by their papers and attendance and the list of Presidents is a roll of honour of Irish medicine.

On behalf of NECTM the local organising committee is delighted to invite you to the 5th Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine in Bergen from June 5 – 8, 2014. The four previous successful biennial conferences, in Edinburgh, Helsinki, Hamburg and Dublin have increasingly gathered delegates from all over Europe and overseas – leading to an expectation that roughly 1000 delegates will come to Bergen. Physicians, nurses, researchers, pharmacists and students in travel medicine and related specialties will find a programme aimed at mirroring travel medicine as a comprehensive discipline encompassing controversies and dilemmas, particularly included in a “Speakers corner”, in free communications and in interactive Objective Structured Knowledge Exchange (OSKE) sessions – successfully introduced at NECTM in Dublin. Bergen commands the spectacular western edge of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The scenic set-up between the beautiful Hardangerfjord and the awe-inspiring Sognefjord is one of Bergen’s biggest landmarks. Among several sites to visit is the architecturally unique Hanseatic Wharf (”Tyskebryggen”), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Hansa set up one of their four European offices back in the 13th century, and the famous Leprosy Museum (Hansen’s Disease) at St. George's Hospital. Delegates should also notice “Norway in a nutshell”, the pré-conference tour into the Sognefjord and up the Flåm Valley back to Bergen on Wednesday June the 4th. The conference venue is “Grieghallen”, the famous concert hall situated in the city centre within walking distance from conference hotels. Our professions include, but are not limited to: Wealth Managers, Private Bankers, Investment Banks, Private Equity Firms, VCs, Family Offices, Physicians, Attorneys, Accountants / Tax Advisors, and Insurance Specialists. And pretty much anyone who has a passion for the bike. Our goal is to spend time on the bike, sharing stories, routes, business ideas, and best practices for optimizing our mental and physical health. While we share ideas and networks, ours is a non-solicitory environment. Do not come pedaling products. (pun intended) We believe that through cycling, a healthy dose of endorphins brings clearer thinking, leading to better solutions and closer relationships. There's nothing like grinding up a mountain to bring out the shared pain and camaraderie. Of course, we like to enjoy a fair amount of good cheer to celebrate the effort afterward! Ride hard!
