This Project was set up to try and follow in the footsteps of Ancient Iron Age boat builders in the Mediterranean style. We'll be focusing on trying to build a section of a boat in a similar style to the 5th Century BC Gela wreck from Sicily. This will focus on using multiple building styles to represent a nautical vessel in a transitional style. This project has been set up by Bournemouth University in conjunction with the Ancient Technology Centre in Cranbourne, Dorset. They will provide the expertise behind the ancient tool use and the materials that the project volunteers need to create the first section of this boat in June 2014. This experimental archaeology project aims to provide a practical understanding of the development of ship-building techniques through the reconstruction of part of a shipwreck’s hull using four distinct methods. By combining the efforts of Bournemouth University students from different disciplines maritime archaeology, design, construction, computing and presentation of these models to conferences), the aim is to further understanding of ship-building methods which, in return, promote inter-disciplinary co-operation and provide each group with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to a realistic project scenario.
