Climate change action in agriculture, forestry and land use group networks professionals searching for climate-smart solutions for agriculture, livestock management, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. Professionals, organizations and students can highlight here their findings from climate change mitigation projects in agricultural sector. Why? Agriculture directly accounts for 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of seven billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. That is almost equal to the transportation sector. What is more, changes in the way land is used, especially deforestation driven by agricultural expansion in tropical areas, account for a further 17 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. Agricultural production systems managed in a climate-smart way, emit fewer greenhouse gases, create significant carbon sinks, and at the same time become more productive and more resilient in the face of climate change. FAO’s Mitigation of climate change in agriculture (MICCA) project works in cooperation with a community of practice that is present also in LinkedIn through this group. This “Community for climate change mitigation in agriculture” helps its members find solutions for the field projects around the world.
