This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in early mornings, loves collaborative problem-solving, and is excited to model regenerative agricultural practices for young people.

About Chewonki Farm

The Salt Marsh Farm at Chewonki is 27 acres of pasture and 1 acre of vegetable and flower production—and it’s at the heart of hands-on environmental education. We grow food, raise laying hens, pigs, and sheep, steward woodlots, and integrate it all into transformative programs for students, campers, and educators. 

Key Duties:

Farm & Garden Leadership

• Oversee 1 acre of production space (field, hoophouse, greenhouse, wash/pack, root cellar).
• Lead crop planning, planting, harvesting, and post-harvest systems.
• Conduct soil testing and steward soil health through cover cropping, rotation, fertilization, and IPM.
• Manage irrigation systems (drip and sprinkler).
• Operate and train others on BCS, tractor, and hand tools.
• Maintain accurate records, inventories, and production schedules.

Livestock & Land Stewardship

• Assist with feeding, health management, reproduction planning, and slaughter coordination.
• Support rotational grazing, fencing, manure management, and pasture fertility.
• Contribute to woodlot management (felling, bucking, splitting).

Supervision & Hiring

• Recruit, hire, and directly supervise Summer/Seasonal Farm Workers.
• Provide coaching, regular check-ins, goal setting, and performance reviews.

Education & Programming

• Facilitate farm chores and work programs for Maine Coast Semester students.
• Implement hands-on farm curriculum for Camp Chewonki.
• Train educators in farm and food systems topics.

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 21 years old.

• Spend time in the field, actively monitoring the crops, “reading” the plants, and identifying pests, diseases, or other challenges;

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Plant Sciences or (International) Agribusiness Studies (background with strong practical experience is also valuable);
• At least 3 years of experience in agribusiness and/or (vegetable) seed cultivation, preferably in pepper;
• A passion for plants and an eye for plant-related pests and diseases;
• Excellent communication skills in English, and preferably also in Dutch;

• Ensure full compliance of tollers with Syngenta's HSES and quality requirements and with regulatory, contractual and financial frameworks.
• Maintain a tolling supply base delivering production flexibility and reliability at a competitive total cost.
• Coordinate and consult the different Syngenta functions on tolling and toller related topics; act as single key point of contact on managerial level.

• Oversee day-to-day operations at the partner processing facility to ensure consistent throughput, quality, and output targets are met
• Manage equipment troubleshooting, preventative maintenance programs, and operational improvements
• Monitor and manage equipment purchases, installations, facility upgrades, and other capital improvements related to the project
• Develop, implement, and oversee QA/QC standards, protocols, and operating procedures for mung bean processing
• Oversee food safety programs and practices, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory, customer, and market requirements
• Conduct regular audits, inspections, and reviews to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement
• Support inbound and outbound logistics, including inventory management, production scheduling, and shipping coordination
• Support implementation of grower engagement programs, including grower communication, field and quality inspections
• Support customer outreach and new business development activities related to Oklahoma operations

• Experience working in agricultural processing facilities (dry edible beans, grains, pulses, or similar commodities)
• Strong familiarity with industrial processing equipment, including the ability to perform or oversee routine maintenance and troubleshooting
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing QA/QC programs, SOPs, and documentation systems in food or agricultural processing environments
• Preferred experience working with dry edible beans, pulses, or specialty crops (ex. Mung beans).
• Preferred existing relationships or networks within grower regions
• Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
• Ability to operate independently while coordinating closely with remote production and business development teams
  
  

• Responsibility for the market-oriented positioning of KWS corn varieties and traits, as well as developing a consistent storytelling strategy for the German market
• Development of market launch concepts, including market and competitor monitoring, and creation of technical content for Marketing and Sales
• Translation of complex technical content and trial results into clear, customer-focused value arguments, as well as presenting technical content at events
• Technical support and further development of the myKWS platform for corn
• Designing and delivering training sessions for the sales team, active communication with internal and external stakeholders, and participation in international project groups
• Supporting the planning, execution, and evaluation of field trials
  
  

• Completed degree in agricultural sciences or a comparable field
• Good knowledge of agricultural and crop production practices
• Ideally, professional experience in the agricultural sector, especially in product management or sales
• Combination of operational, commercial, and strategic thinking, along with strong analytical skills
• High level of creativity, excellent communication skills, and a responsible, results-oriented working style
• Willingness to travel within Germany (>30%)
