The Committee on Criminal Justice Advocacy for People with Mental Illness is established to seek improved legal services for people with mental illness involved with the police, courts, prisons and jails, hospitals and other institutions. The Committee will be proactive by enhancing mental health education, awareness, as well as by working to guarantee that the civil rights of people with mental illness are protected. We will collaborate with state agencies, including the Division of Mental Health, with county and local governments and community agencies to seek these ends. We will advocate for specific improvements in the services and protections for people with mental illness, including such things as: • The establishment of well-supported and well-staffed Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) in all communities; • Improvements in the interactions between people with mental illness and the criminal justice system; • The elimination of violence against and inhumane treatment of people with mental illness in jails and prisons; • Improved mental health services and access to medications for people with mental illness in jails and prisons; • Widespread use and support for mental healthand other jail diversion programs; and • The establishment of mental health advisory boards to serve municipal, township, and county government. • We want to make sure that the mentally ill released from jails and prisons get the treatment and other services needed to reduce recidivism, maintain public safety, and restore productive citizenship.

The Next Generation Program provides a series of educational and networking opportunities held over several days during the annual National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. The program is open to qualified bankruptcy attorneys with five to ten years of practice. Law firms, government agencies and bankruptcy judges are invited to nominate program participants. Nominations are typically due in May each year, and the program typically takes place the following fall. This is a private group of program participants, and it is not sponsored by or affiliated with the United States Bankruptcyor any other governmental entity. New and ongoing membership in the group is solely within the moderator's discretion.
