In order for firefighters to understand the development and behaviour of fire in compartments, they must be exposed to realistic conditions that allow the student to witness the development phases of a fire. This experience should also allow for the student to interact with the smoke and flame and to practice techniques that may assist in controlling, reducing or mitigating the progression of fire at various stages of potential development. Swedish Fire Engineers are also required to experience these conditions and this allows them to experience compartment fire from the perspective of someone who may be trapped, or from the perspective of a firefighter. This training produces a fire protection engineer that understands fire not only at a theoretical level, but most importantly at a practical level.
