The toll industry has gone through significant changes again in the last few years Currently, nearly all toll agencies in the United States are planning for and implementing All Electronic Tolling (AET), which eliminates cash toll collection in the lanes. AET will continue to utilize RFID technology as the primary toll collection method supplemented with video image capture technology for non-RFID customers. This transition to “cashless” toll collection will affect all existing and proposed toll facilities operations. In addition, several toll agencies are also evaluating their procurement approach to systems and services and considering commercialized outsource systems and platforms that leverage existing commercial services used in other industries. The Alliance for Toll Innovation(ATI) was created to 1) pursue platforms that allow for scalable and to future proof technologies for toll collection, 2) adopt new payment methods to provide customers more options and increase revenue efficiency in AET systems and 3) collaboration and learning from each other is really key to evolving in these new technologies and business models.
