WRUV began as a student club at the University of Vermont in 1954. In 1956 the club went on the air as one of the first AM stations in the Burlington area. The station was located in the barn behind Pomeroy Hall on the UVM campus. In October of 1965 WRUV became an FM station, but simulcastcontinued until the early 1970s when the classical AM format was dissolved. At this time WRUV decided to become a free-format station, as opposed to the rotation system that most commercial and college radio stations adopt. In 1986 WRUV moved to the bottom floor of the Billings Student Center. In 2007, it moved to the bottom floor of the new Davis Student Center. WRUV is operated entirely by volunteers, except for the Chief Engineer, which is the only paid position at the station. Students have the opportunity to be paid for their efforts at WRUV through the University's work-study program. WRUV strives - to provide UVM students with the technical knowledge and managerial experience involved in radio broadcasting - to assess voids in FM programming in the Burlington area, and to offer alternative radio to the University of Vermont campus and the Greater Burlington, Plattsburgh, and Internet communities - to offer responsible and unique programming that cannot be heard on any other station or seen on major video outlets in the same area; to be a creative entity at UVM and in the greater community - to expose its listening audience to many different types of music, news, and educational programming - to provide a top quality on-air product and to be as professional as possible - to meet its designation by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as an educational non-profit radio station
