This LinkedIn GLS Group is comprised of parties interested in connecting with each other regarding the study of learning in video games. The Games, Learning, and Society group is a collection of academic researchers, interactive media (or game) developers, and government and industry leaders who investigate how this medium operates, how it can be used to transform how we learn, and what this means for society. We seek to understand what cognitive work goes into playing video games, how these design features might be leveraged to improve learning via the design of learning systems, and how organizations such as schools will need to respond. We have a particular interest in how games can address three primary educational needs. Specifically helping students: 1) develop complex, academic language in and out of schools, something our current educational system fails to do for many; 2) think innovatively and creatively in science and technology; 3) become "tech-savvy" consumers and producers of knowledge with technology. GLS studies and builds learning systems -- or social practices connected with technology. This ranges from designing curriculum around games like World of Warcraft to teach technology literacy practices, to designing interactive learning systems to teach high school biology. Our core competence is in understanding how games work, and how game mechanics might be used to produce learning both in and out of schools. Our goals are not just to transmit content, but to enable learners to develop into competent, creative problem solvers who engage in meaningful social practices - and come to identify themselves as experts within a domain.

Child Aid’s mission is to create opportunity for Latin America’s rural and indigenous poor through childhood literacy and education programs. We conduct reading programs in partnership with over 25 communities in Guatemala and put books into the hands of thousands of children. We provide critical training to teachers and librarians and offer scholarships to impoverished students. Child Aid’s literacy work provides the means for children to break out of poverty and build better lives for themselves and their families. In Guatemala, there are three main components to our literacy work: Transforming Community Libraries Local libraries are a cornerstone of our literacy work. Child Aid provides resources and ongoing training to librarians. We connect libraries with schools and transform them into sustainable centers for learning. Working with local organizations for over 16 years, Child Aid has helped create more than 35 libraries in Guatemala, and we continue to support and improve them for the benefit of children. Training Rural Teachers Most teachers in Guatemala have the equivalent of a high school diploma and lack training to effectively teach and promote reading. We provide ongoing teacher training and classroom follow-up, reaching hundreds of rural educators, benefiting thousands of children. Bringing Books to Children Most classrooms in rural Guatemala lack books entirely. Each year, Child Aid sends tens of thousands of quality Spanish language books to rural schools and libraries in Guatemala. Many children in our literacy programs are able to bring books home to share and enjoy for the first time in their lives.
