Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (aquatic animal farming) and hydroponic (vegetable and/or fruit farming in the absence of soil) systems. It is a closed-loop system meaning all water removed from the fish tanks is returned after sufficient filtration without releasing effluents into the environment. Nutrient rich waste water from fishis used as a natural fertiliser to grow aof vegetables and/or fruits. The nutrients utilised by the plants (nitrates, phosphates, etc) are removed from the water and therefore the production of the crop also acts as a biological filter for nutrients that would ordinarily have to be diluted by new water entering the system to maintain water quality. The clean water can then be returned to the fish system. As a result, farms can become more sustainable and profitable.
