There are hundreds of thousands of high-mix, low-volume (HMLV) production systems all over the world. Most of them are job shops of make-to-order (MTO) type which face some difficulty with production control and management. They include, fabrication shops, forge shops, print shops, makers of tools/dies/molds, furniture makers, woodworking units, shipyards, repair shops, etc. Even some labs function like job shops. They cannot be transformed (or simplified) easily and economically into one or more production lines each of which produces similar products without major differences strictly one after another using dedicated resources.
