Open AIR is a unique collaborative network of researchers spread across 14 African countries, Canada, and elsewhere answering two overarching questions: How can open collaborative innovation help businesses scale up and seize the new opportunities of a global knowledge economy? And which intellectual property (IP) and associated knowledge governance systems will best ensure that the social and economic benefits of innovation are shared inclusively across society as a whole? Open AIR’s primary goal is to uncover new insights to ease tensions between IP and access to knowledge. Specifically, we aim to solve a problem at the heart of IP and innovation policy, which is how to reconcile tensions between appropriation and access, excluding and sharing, and competing and collaborating. In dealing with this problem, Open AIR’s current project is showing how knowledge-based businesses can bypass outmoded, constrictive knowledge governance practices to capitalise on emerging trends. A partnership involving five leading academic institutions — the University of Ottawa in Canada, the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Strathmore University in Kenya, the Nigerian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, and the American University in Cairo, Egypt — Open AIR has recently been awarded prestigious, multi-million-dollar grants to supports its work over the next 3-7 years from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Allameh Tabatabaei University (ATU) (Persian: دانشگاه علامه طباطبائی), is a public university in Tehran, Iran, under the supervision of the Ministry of Sciences, Research and Technology. It is the largest specialized state social sciences university in Iran and the Middle East, with 15000 students and 500 full-time faculty members. After its establishment by articulation of 24 independent colleges and faculties in 1983, the university evolved into the country’s most eminent university in humanities and social sciences. Before that, the university was known as "The Advanced School of Commerce" which was initially founded in 1956, before the Islamic Revolution, with academic support from American institutions. Allameh Tabatabaei University is mainly active in the humanities and economic sciences.
