Doulos Story: Against the backdrop of a heavily catastrophic pandemic, an extraordinary lady, Emma Van der Merwe, had the courage and infinite passion to establish an organization called Doulos Ministries South Africa for the benefit of children living with or affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.. After nursing her own mother, who passed away because of HIV/AIDS, she opened Doulos’s doors in July 2003. Now a registered non-profitableand YouthCentre, she has managed to reach some of her goals. Doulos Child and Youth Care Centre provides accommodation and individualized 24 Hour care for victims of this pandemic, providing love and security for these children, many of whom are shunned by their own families. Emma initially envisaged that this ministry would focus on children up to the age of six years. Her vision was semi-realized when the Care Centre opened. Since then, she has found that the need for such a service would be far greater than originally anticipated. The Care Centre is able to accommodate up to 30 children between the ages of 5days and 13 years. In this same centre terminally ill children are cared for.. A full-time Social worker takes care of the Social Work Component. However, it did not stop there for this remarkable woman. She also undertook to start a Drop In Centre in Sicelo Township as the need for intervention stretches beyond us all. At the Drop In Centre, 300 children are provided with a cooked meal every day. Psycho-social support programmes are run on a daily basis to improve the quality of life of these children. Realising that the need out there is far greater than our resources, we take pride in the fact that we change the lives of our children.
