AVIATION ENGLISH HUB FOR AVIATION PROFESSIONALS The Aviation English Hub provides a platform where aviation professionals with an interest in the use of English, can meet like-minded colleagues from around the world to share their experiences and ideas. , pilots, Aviation English teachers, English language proficiency testers and raters, as well as other professionals involved in communicating in English, are welcome to join the Hub, whether English is their first, second or third language. AIMS - To encourage participants to practise speaking English and connect with other professionals. NB These sessions are not English lessons. - To help Aviation English trainers improve their technical knowledge by talking with ATCOs and pilots. - To share ideas in creating teaching material for aviation professionals. Sessions are created and hosted by volunteers. This is a not-for-profit project. HOW TO JOIN A HUB SESSION click on the link in the post BACKGROUND After 2 months of lockdown, Valerie Wilson, an Aviation English Trainer working with French ATCOs, turned to social media to invite controllers from around the world to link up with French controllers to talk about work-related topics. The project took off and led to the launch of regular International ATCO MeetUps. Grounded airline pilots were also invited with the aim of improving controller-pilot communication and mutual understanding. It became apparent that the MeetUps were attracting controllers from far and wide wanting to practise their English. In January 2022, the Hub was created, giving controllers from more than 40 countries, access to a free platform in Google Calendar, where they can meet and interact in English. It shortly evolved to include other professions in the aviation industry such as pilots and Aviation English Trainers, thus giving added value to the discussions.

AUTOPACE is a research project funded by the SESAR Joint Undertaking within the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 699238. It performs fundamental research on psychological modelling to predict how future automation would impact on air traffic controllers (ATCo) performance and to identify competences and training to cope with the effects of automation on humans. The air traffic management (ATM) system moves towards an increasingly high level of automation which will provide outstanding performance benefits. Automation will unavoidably change the ATCo work environment and the role of the human will be focused on more complex and high-value tasks. In such a role, humans must maintain the understanding of the automated systems’ decisions and human machine interaction must foster human confidence while keeping the human in the loop of the operations. AUTOPACE proposes applying psychological modelling to understand the impact of automation on human performance. AUTOPACE is performing analytical studies to estimate cognitive demanded resources in a 2050 environment based on the multiple resource theory, and applying different attentional theories for establishing the principles that govern ATCo cognition.Once these principles are set, AUTOPACE will look at the use of psychological modelling to support the identification of future competences and training strategies. As a result of its research activity, AUTOPACE will produce an experimental plan to validate the psychological model that determines the automation impacts and it will provide understanding on how new competences and training strategies will help future controller to cope with automation. These two main outputs will enable a methodology for the analysis of the automation impact on Human Performance.

Over time, and with traffic growth, this technology has shown its limitations. To address these, the Controller-Pilot Data-Link Communications (CPDLC) - an air/ground data-link application has been developed. This group aims to enable people interested in CPDLC to discuss about different implementations, to share operational concerns, etc.
