The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) is a non-political association that fosters the study of the Middle East, promotes high standards of scholarship and teaching, and encourages public understanding of the region and its peoples through programs, publications and services that enhance education, further intellectual exchange, recognize professional distinction, and defend academic freedom. From its inception in 1966 with 50 founding members, MESA has increased its membership to more than 3,000 and now serves as an umbrella organization for more than sixty institutional members and thirty-nine affiliated organizations. This group focuses on the Architecture used to Manage an Enterprise (i.e., "BIG" enterprise architect (EA)), i.e., an organization operating within its business, social, economic, political, ecological, and technology context. A Management Architecture (MA), as a knowledge-base, enables holistic leadership and management of an endeavor within its environment, i.e., its enterprise. The MA provides the organizing basis for the capability now called "Cognitive Computing". A MA is a management lifecycle built from dynamic enterprise terminology (as a progression of semantic products). The metamodel (i.e., knowledge model, ontology, schema) of the MA is called the General Endeavor Management (GEM) metamodel. A MA then serves as the underlying knowledge-base of instance data for securing, sharing, and distributing situational intelligence and lifecycle operations for endeavors of all types, in general, i.e., GEM. GEM is the concurrent and cooperative lifecycle management of all activities across the enterprise and both its distinct and aggregated value-chains.
