In October 2016, India ratified the COP21 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The agreement will have a significant bearing on the energy sector. There are three major deliverables for India – 1. India will have to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by 33-35 per cent from the levels on 2005. This goal has to be achieved by 2030. 2. To achieve about 40 percent cumulativeinstalled capacity from non fossil fuel based energy resources 2030 with the help of transfer of technology and low cost international finance including from Green Climate Fund (GCF). To achieve that, India will need a 175 Gigawatt power production capacity from renewable energy sources by 2025. 3. India will need to increase the forest cover by five million hectares and also improve the quality of green cover of an equal measure. This will be used to achieve the targeted absorption of 2.5-3 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission was launched on the 11th January, 2010 by the Prime Minister. The Mission has set the ambitious target of deploying 22 GW of grid connected solar power by 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given his approval for increasing the national solar mission capacity to 100 GW by 2022. The 100 GW solar power capacity has been divided into rooftop solar electricity(40 GW) and large and medium-scale grid-connected solar projects (60 GW). According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) officials, it is expected that the total investment for upgrading to 100 GW solar power capacity will cost around Rs 6,00,000 crore ($94 billion).
