The CBD and high street areas of Christchurch housed a significant number of artists, craft practitioners, and designers prior to the 22nd February earthquake in 2011. Now, almost all have lost their studios and spaces following the closure of the Christchurch inner city and surrounding areas. ArtBox is an unique architectural system that has been designed to address this need. It is a modular, component based system that creates flexible spaces suitable for galleries and studios which can be hired by the arts community, at a minimal weekly charge. There are three pavilion designs that will be built and installed on the old 'Southlander' site during 2013. They are the L-Pavilion, the Studio or 'Bridge Pavilion' and the Gallery or 'Lantern Pavilion'. ArtBox is located on the corner of Madras and St Asaph Streets opposite the Anton Parsons sculpture "Passing Time". While our main goal has been the development of studios and galleries, we have two other strands to our plan. This includes, building a resource that will support the creative arts in the central city, somewhere people with an interest in the arts can meet and socialise, and to seed other developments in the central city such as Beatbox, the Telstraclear Bands for Hope commemorative sculpture and the Arts Hub and Boxed Quarter projects. In all respects we are slowly but surely achieving our goals. Coming up next week, on February 20, we’ll be unveiling the TelstraClear commemorative earthquake sculpture, Bands for Hope, by one of our local artists. This sculpture will take centre stage in the space next to the L-Pavilion, the first of four buildings which we're about to open. The first official pavilion and gallery opening is on the following Wednesday, February 27 at 5.30. We’re planning an evening of music, food and entertainment to launch ArtBox into the public domain.
