News & events relating to Acids 2 Value. ------------------------------------------------- The environment and water resources in South Africa are negatively impacted by mining activities. This project creates a research opportunity for treating mining effluent (acid mine drainage known as AMD) in an environmentally and socioeconomically sustainable way. South Africa has remarkable mineral wealth including gold and coal. Unfortunately, the mining industries have left a legacy of negative impacts. Among the most critical of these is AMD which arises as a negative externality from mining activities. It poses a substantial threat to water resources, aquatic ecosystems and human health. These are especially relevant to SA as a water-scarce country. In this project we hypothesize that our research into the remediation and consequent upcycling of the inherent value contained within the AMD, whilst understanding the socio-economic factors can establish the potential for unlocking alternative water resources and value. This will be done through the generation of new knowledge. It is envisaged that these would generate economic value at a local scale and remediate AMD into a safe water resource. This project will focus on the Witwatersrand Basin where ground- and surface water suffers from widespread AMD contamination. It is there that we are able to base a competent project team comprising leading South African and Danish university partners and private enterprises in a network with authorities, water utilities, mining representatives and local communities. By including the socio-economic value of the proposed research we will demonstrate the relevance of the treatment to wider society and create knowledge for effective, sustainable and science-based policymaking.
