BBUGS shall pursue the following aims and objectives: (i) Advancing the knowledge of all factors affecting the design, construction and operation of underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin, including technical aspects, health and safety, and sustainable development; (ii) Promoting and reviewing research and development of relevant projects; (iii) Communicating and linking with other local and international like associations concerned with the application, planning and practice of geotechnical aspects of underground coal mining; and (iv) Reviewing the adequacy of education and training of technologists associated with the science, engineering and practice of geotechnical aspects of underground coal mining.

Established in 1961, the council aims to: - provide a forum for the sharing of geological info on the coalfields of NSW and their reserves, exploration and mining - provide effective industry/government consultation on all matters involving coalfield and mining geology - establish & revise codes/standards/guidelines for geology in the coalfields - enable the exchange of ideas on geoscience techniques and terms employed in coalfield geology - to appropriately distribute the results of the Council's considerations and activities. Membership is diverse with private industry, consultancy and government represented. This broad range represents a large body of experience across all fields ofgeology. The CGC NSW has an active role in developing and delivering training courses which relate to coal geology and is also the organising body for the Sydney Basin Symposium. The CGC NSW has also facilitated honours projects and vacation employment through members' companies. Meetings of the CGC NSW are held of the first Friday in March, June, September and December.
