The Group has steel manufacturing facilities in Orissa and Jharkhand. The Coal Industry Society was originally founded in 1929 as a networking club for gentleman in the coal trade with the objective of bringing together and mentoring younger members through regular luncheons, where prominent persons were invited to speak on matters of interest to the trade, and through educational activities supported by the Society. Long term past presidents include Lord Gainford and Viscount Hyndley as well as the Rt Hon The Lord Ezra. In 1967 women guests were admitted and Barbara Castle MP, then Minister of Transport, became the first lady guest speaker to address the Society and in 1974 women were allowed to become full members. Over the past twenty years the Society has been addressed by a number of Ministers responsible for Energy throughout a time of considerable change in the energy landscape. Currently the CIS holds five lunches per season at different locations which attract a wide range of attendees involved with the, importing, transportation, certification and combustion of coal.
