Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering, computer science, and others. Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing. These technologies are used to develop machines that can substitute for humans and replicate human actions. Robots can be used in many situations and for lots of purposes, but today many are used in dangerous environments (including bomb detection and deactivation), manufacturing processes, or where humans cannot survive (e.g. in space, under water, in high heat, and clean up and containment of hazardous materials and radiation). The concept of creating machines that can operate autonomously dates back to classical times, but research into the functionality and potential uses of robots did not grow substantially until the 20th century. FEEL is a research laboratory focusing on the development of low cost and mechanically flexible photovoltaic (PV) devices, large-area microelectronics and integrated renewable energy systems. FEEL is located at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of UBC, and is a member of Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC) and AMPEL. Flexible PV and electronic devices have the potential for roll-to-roll manufacturing with significantly reduced costs in near future. This is also a paradigm shift for electronic devices from today’s centralized silicon chips to flexible smart phones, clothes, car/building components, and health-monitoring devices. Similar to natural organisms, future electronic devices need to generate their own energy, sense their environment, and perform a designated function. At FEEL, we use novel electronic materials such as nanowires and nanotubes for making low-cost and flexible electronics that facilitates this vision for future electronics. Contact interactions across the interfaces are significant in the engineering and medical industries associated with various applications. For instance, the crashing of cars, relative slip between concrete and reinforcing steel in buildings, contact between soil and building foundation, the flow of red blood cells through blood vessels, knee joints, prosthetics designing,processes like sheet-metal forming, machine parts like car tires, gears, shafts, fluid bearing, all involve contact interactions. Contact also exists at the nano- and micro-scale levels. Examples include the contact between thesystems, like the adhesion mechanism of geckos and insects, and contact between the nanoparticles in the mechanical analysis of materials. Sometimes, contact study includes considering other fields like thermal or electromagnetic, such as the analysis of cooling electronic devices and heat removal with nuclear power plant vessels.
