In April 2009 Piemonte regional authorities (North-west Italy) approved the local Biotech and med-tech innovation cluster Piemonte Biosciences. The cluster has been formally launched in July 2009. The cluster, composed by 80 companies, universities, R&D centres and research/foundations, is animated by Bioindustry Park Silvano Fumero with a model similar to the Innovation Pole in France. The cluster management company, Bioindustry Park, will have the task to enlarge the network at local, national and international level, offering shared services to the local companies, access to shared facilities and support for the development both at local and international level. Bioindustry Park will also facilitate the access to regional R&D financing. The innovation cluster will be focused around thematic areas of interest (oncology, cardiovascular, inflammation & autoimmunity, cell and molecular therapies, imaging, etc) that will be reviewed each year. Such thematich area will be clustered around tho technologcal paths: A) New technologies for pharma and diagnostic applications such as molecular and cell therapies, imaging, etc; B) New technologies for biomedical and service applications (such as new materials, nano, ict, etc) and two application sector (High medical need application and non direct human health care applications). The cluster is based also on partnership that are in place with more of 10 European clusters (Cambridge, Paris, Barcelona, Munich, Israel, Basque county, Tuscany, China etc) in order to give to the system the possibility to have an international breath. SmartSantander proposes a unique in the world city-scale experimental research facility in support of typical applications and services for a smart city. This unique experimental facility will be sufficiently large, open and flexible to enable horizontal and vertical federation with other experimental facilities and stimulates development of new applications by users of various types including experimental advanced research on IoT technologies and realistic assessment of users’ acceptability tests. The facility will comprise more than 20,000 sensors and will be based on a real life IoT deployment in an urban setting. The core of the facility will be located in the city of Santander, the capital of the region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain, and its surroundings.
