The Association for Bright Children (ABC) is a registered, non-profit organization interested in the welfare of bright children in our community. ABC local chapters serve both parents and children by organizing family activities and children's programs, arranging for speakers, and distributing relevant current information for parents. We advise on identification, placement and review process and procedures. We also serve as a support group and information resource for our members and others interested in bright and gifted children. Local Chapters and Ontario ABC serve as advocates for appropriate programs and services for bright children within the schools, at the Boards and in the Ministry of Education. We have representatives on the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for both the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board. Further, our Chapter is represented at the provincial level through Ontario ABC, where we work with the Ministry of Education and Training on behalf of the bright and gifted. We REPRESENT all gifted students through our positions on the public and separate school boards' Special Education Advisory Committees. At SEAC we review, comment on and make proposals for improvements to the plans and work of special education programs in both Boards. We ADVOCATE with and for individual families and children in gaining the special education programs that they need and are entitled to under provincial legislation. We keep PARENTS INFORMED on the choices their children face as they move through the school system. Helping Hand House was founded in 1984 to ensure that no family in Pierce County would go without a home. What began as the vision of one woman, has become a nationally recognized model for changing lives. HHH was founded in 1984 by a Puyallup woman who believed that no family in her community should be without a home. Together with members of her church, she developed a few temporary homes for homeless families. The founding members believed that within a few years they could “solve” the problem of homelessness, and their work would be done. For the first four years, Helping Hand House was run entirely by volunteers with money received from local service clubs, churches, and individual donors. When it became apparent that homelessness was increasing, not decreasing, and that the causes were more complex than they’d thought, the founders decided to expand the program and to do more to address the causes of homelessness in their client families. The organization began to offer case management services to all program families. Today, with a staff of fifteen, Helping Hand House welcomes homeless families into one of four programs: Homeless Prevention Assistance, Emergency Housing, Transitional Housing, and Permanent Supportive Housing. To be eligible, families must include at least one child age 17 or younger, reside in Pierce County, Washington, and be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Helping Hand House case management has evolved over the years into the regionally recognized model offered today. A focus on financial literacy and increased education and employment helps families stabilize their immediate housing situation while building skills for long term financial stability. The goal for all families in all programs is exit to permanent housing with an income sufficient to support the household.
