In July, 2001 Colonel Guy Cloud donated $250,000 to establish the Maverick Investment Program. After two years of excellent results, Colonel Cloud generously gave another $90,000 to the program. In ten years, the participants in this program have grown Colonel Cloud’s gift to almost $500,000. As September of 2011, after poor market performance, the portfolio is worth $420,000. Each year since inception the fund has out performed the S&P 500 index. If these returns continue, the Maverick Investment Program may eventually begin issuing scholarships with excess returns. What’s more, the program members hope to eventually receive additional outside funding in order to create multiple portfolio strategies. This will allow the University to expand its investment program by allowing more students to participate in the hands-on investment process Since inception, the club has met monthly, four times a semester, in the spring and fall semesters. Each semester has a buy/sell meeting, usually at the end of the semester where we exhaustively discuss equities, analysis, return and risk. Meetings are held in front of the voting student member group who both elect officers each semester and contribute to stock selection. Senior officers who are also enrolled in prestigious FNBK 4610 class utilize the Investment Science Lab to manage the portfolio and check its performance. The officers of Maverick Investment Program are scheduled to meet with Warren Buffet every Fall Semester. We would like to extend a thank you to Mr. Warren Buffett for taking his valuable the time to meet with students. This opportunity allows officers to benefit from Mr. Buffett’s uniqueand general life lessons. In 2011, the Maverick Investment Program attended the inaugural Quinnipiac Global Asset Management Education Forum at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. The senior officers competed in the student-managed portfolio competition held at the forum.
