The British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU) aims to serve Britain’s interests through advancing the Parliamentary dimension of Britain’s foreign relations. The BGIPU has a membership of over 600 parliamentarians and its key aim is to promote the parliamentary dimension of Britain’s foreign relations. In common with other IPU national groups in many countries, the BGIPU consists of members of all parties and the cross-benches. Membership is open to all members of the House of Commons and House of Lords. The priority for the BGIPU’s parliamentary diplomacy effort is to promote and consolidate the Britain’s interests abroad and engage Parliamentarians in key global issues through encouraging trade and sustainable economic development, supporting effective global peace and security mechanisms, defending universal human rights norms and respect for the rule of law, expanding awareness and understanding on multilateralism and cross-cutting issues like climate change, conflict prevention and encouraging the consolidation of parliamentary democracy worldwide. In doing so, it seeks to advance the key role that parliaments can play in international affairs, including through the IPU, particularly regarding promoting parliamentary capacity building and bolster democratic norms and institutions. The British Group is governed by an Executive Committee whose members are elected according to the Rules of the Group, at the Annual General Meeting. This is a group for those who are part of the class (Spring 2016) under the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po Paris. Taught by Sara Bryan Pasquier (IEA, Energy Efficiency Division). The Energy Efficiency Policy course will expose students to the full range of demand-side energy efficiency measures available to help policymakers scale up energy efficiency. Students will learn how to select, plan, implement and evaluate energy efficiency policies in the buildings, appliance, lighting, equipment, transport and industry sectors. During interactive classes, they will be asked to tailor existing energy efficiency policies and measures to different cultural, economic and regional contexts. They will also learn to monitor energy efficiency's contribution to national goals (climate, security, economic, social, etc.)

Since the mid 1990s, Canada has deployed less and less military and police peacekeepers but has increased the number of civilian peacekeepers seconded to international missions, particularly with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe [OSCE] and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization [NATO]. Rather than sending personnel already working in ministries like Foreign Affairs, the Department of National Defence or Border Services, the Government has frequently deployed experts recruited from outside. They generally do the same or comparable work and are required to have qualifications equal to or superior to those sent in uniform or from Foreign Affairs. Often, they work in very dangerous environments like eastern Ukraine or the former Yugoslavia. Many, if not most, of Canada's female peacekeepers have been part of this group. Despite all this, the Government of Canada has generally treated them in a very shoddy way: paying salaries that are less than that of a summer intern, denying benefits & allowances, refusing to take responsibility for their wellbeing and giving them no recognition. Their status is somewhat similar to that of the Merchant Marine who risked their lives in two World Wars and had to campaign for over 50 years for recognition and compensation. The Academy at Florida International University (FIU) is now offering a 30-credit Professional Master's in Disaster Management through the Steven J. Green School for International and Public Affairs. The graduate degree program has been developed in response to the growing recognition and need for graduate level education in disaster management. Drawing on faculty from across FIU's nationally recognized colleges and programs as well as disaster practitioners with international and national preparedness and response disaster experience, the program's curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature and scope and designed to develop and improve the skills of disaster practitioners and those interested in entering the exciting field of disaster management. The graduate degree will be offered in an 11-month executive format culminating with a disaster field operations course whereby students will engage in a field simulated exercise focusing on the practical issues that arise in a disaster (rapid damage and public health assessment, shelter and site planning, field cluster sampling, water, sanitation and hygiene, personal security, food aid, and operational approaches to relations with the military).
