Pulp and paper manufacturing is known for its complexity regarding processes, materials, chemicals, contaminants involved along the production chain. Such complexity directly impacts implementation of the most efficient solution for wastewater management viewpoint. Specific pollution indexes or criteria (AOX, Color, COD, Sludge …) are common standards used by the regulation to control final discharges. But the situation is not static and new constraints such as shortage in fresh water supply, focus on specific contaminants, production changes, are now increasing. There is a need to reassess existing techniques with new possibilities. From this background, I believe it takes sense to have a dedicated group on wastewater treatment techniques especially designed for the pulp and paper industry. The idea is to exchange together on current issues/solutions found into existing installations (troubleshooting, impact of process modifications…), but also regulations aspect and its evolution in the short/medium term, and finally the emergence of new techniques improving overall performance.
