This nanocellulose symposium will review recent progress in production and applications - both industrial and emerging. It will be divided in three topics: 1) fundamentals; 2) applications and emerging fields and 3) sustainability. The fundamental section investigates the interface between science and engineering. It explores the interactions of nanoparticles with their environment and analyses the effect at the various length scales. Work on the frontiers of self-assembling, adsorption (gas, liquid), light-nanoparticles interaction, and analytical/characterization techniques will be presented. The nanocellulose application section will review the recent progress, development, opportunities and challenge of industrial nanotechnology. Of special interest is the use of nanocellulose for biomedical applications, diagnostics, biomaterials, nanoparticles, personal care, new paper products and nanoelectronics. As nanocellulose has become a reality, engineers now have to focus on sustainability. It is crucial to develop sustainable processes and products, relying on renewable materials, recyclable products and environmentally friendly concepts.
