Part of the International Council on System Engineering (INCOSE), the Linked-In Transportation Working Group is an online community for Transportation Systems Engineers. We are an international group and our members represent system owners, consultants, suppliers, trainers, researchers and academics. The group exists to exists to foster a community of transportation systems engineers, and support the improvement and deployment of systems engineering best practice on public and private ground transportation systems with emphasis on roadways, rail, bus and metro. Major challenges face ground transportation projects, including: • New technology applications and their integration with legacy systems • Requirements management and change management in dynamic environments over multi-year project development cycles • Definition of systems verification and validation (test & acceptance) processes that ensure the Owner gets a system that performs as expected over its lifecycle Failure to address these challenges properly has resulted in projects that did not deliver their required benefits and exceeded their budgets and schedules. We all have a stake in improving project delivery and we believe that the application of SE will enable the success of the complex projects that will provide the means to move more people and goods securely and efficiently. RISE Safety and Transport (Fire Research) organizes biennially FIVE. Fires in vehicles pose a significant treat to life and property. Recently, fires in buses have been in focus due to catastrophic incidents for example in Germany. Train fires are also high on the research agenda due to recent European-based research projects such as TRANSFEU. A nightmare scenario is a large vehicle fire in a tunnel. At the same time new fuels and electrical vehicles are emerging in response to our need for sustainable transport alternatives. Such alternative vehicles introduce new fire challenges that need to be accounted for. In response to the pressing need for international dialogue SP is organising the conference: FIVE (Fires In Vehicles). The objective of this conference is to exchange knowledge of fires in vehicles, including both road and rail vehicles. In recognition of the fact that many of the fire problems faced by these vehicles are the same, the solutions to them can also be similar. FIVE will bring together scientists, regulators, test engineers, industry, suppliers, insurance companies and other organisations from the diverse field of transportation to discuss important fire issues. We believe that this exchange of knowledge will significantly enhance economic and safe solutions – sustainable solutions – to problems in the fire area.
