The Surface Modification and Characterisation Collaboration Centre (SMC3) will drive collaborative research in interfacial sciences for product development and innovation. Surfaces and interfaces play an important role in determining the commercial success and performance of many products. Advances in surface modification technologies offer novel product functionality and the ability to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve resource utilisation across supply chains. This includesprocesses and the maintenance of infrastructure in the built environment. Opportunities are also emerging for the production of coatings and chemicals and for the treatment of surfaces from sustainable non-petrochemical feedstock. SMC3 will proactively build projects across industrial sectors that will help to boost UK manufacturing industries such as: transportation, chemicals, industrial, equipment, electrical equipment, fossil fuels, renewable energy and medical devices sectors. Engaging with industry, SMC3 will thrive on making fundamental advances in interfacial science and translating these into novel prototype products and processes for industrial adoption. The Centre will establish a network of strategic partners from industry, government, academia and investment bodies. By working closely with its partners and clients throughout the full innovation value chain, SMC3 will offer services from innovation strategy, project development, investigative research and proof-of-concept through to commercialisation.

The Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division (SERAD) was originally formed in 1991 by merging ASME's Safety Division (est. 1951) and the Risk Analysis Task Force. Its function is to stimulate interest in and disseminate risk analysis and safety information as applied to the process of mechanical engineering. Member activity has expanded to include product liability, loss prevention and occupational health. Safety is the reduced risk achieved by successful application of engineering understanding and controls to hazards. For new products and processes, risk is identified and minimized by analysis of previous experience and conservative design. The interests of SERAD extend across most of theASME Divisions. This Division works with industry, ASME Codes & Standards, and other relevant professional and regulatory organizations to discuss, review, and promote practices which lead to reduced risk and improved occupational environments. The basic concern for human health and safety as well as the reduction in business interruptions and insurance costs makes the work of the Division increasingly important. SERAD members include engineers conducting research and practicing engineers in risk analysis, mechanicaldesign, occupational health and safety, environmental control, toxic and explosive hazards from dusts and gases, radiation hazards, process (system) operations, design, maintenance, and testing. Also important are ergonomics, consumer product safety, liability prevention, improvements toprocesses for safety, and safety insystems.
