Our organization employs integrated waste management and circular economy strategies to generate employment opportunities while addressing climate change. We have established a dedicated waste management team that conducts weekly waste collection across two subcounties. The collected waste is sorted, with organic waste transported to our facility for value addition. Our operations include a poultry farm, a Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farm, vegetable cultivation, a vermiculture farm, and an Azolla farm. We utilize waste in two primary ways: first, the BSF effectively decomposes wet waste into frass fertilizer, which is then applied to our vegetable crops. Additionally, household waste serves as feed for both BSF and vermicomposting worms, which are rich in protein and significantly reduce poultry feed costs by 60%. Second, our composting site produces three tonnes of organic manure, which is utilized on our farms, ensuring that we grow food without chemical fertilizers. This composting process also mitigates carbon emissions associated with waste in landfills, while lowering our input costs. Furthermore, we are capitalizing on a problematic weed that has been affecting local farmers to cultivate silkworms, which yield silk. Sericulture is a highly profitable venture, and in collaboration with JAICA, we have secured a ready market and access to low-cost feed, benefiting many farmers in Nyalenda, Kisumu. We have begun utilizing waste from silkworms to produce briquettes, with plans to scale up production. This initiative provides clean and affordable energy for our community and supports our business by heating poultry houses during rainy seasons. Our overarching goal is to embrace circularity to enhance production, reduce costs, and meet client demands for chicken meat, eggs, vegetables,, and organic manure.
