The port sector is a crucial actor to implement Circular Economy initiatives as it serves as 'matchmaker' and crossing-point for all kinds of waste and industrial flows and acts as logistics hubs for the import and export of waste materials, which is why port clusters are ideal places to further assess and incorporate circular economy strategies. Besides, ports accommodate industries that are active in the treatment,and shipment of waste and stimulate the emergence of innovation circles. The main goal of the LOOP-Ports project is to facilitate the transition to a more circular economy in the port sector, where value of products, materials and resources is maintained in the economy for as long as possible, and the integration of waste minimised. This project will contribute to the transition of the European economy towards closed-loop systems through the creation of a Circular Economy Network in ports, which will provide an innovation ecosystem around the port activity and stimulate circular economy initiatives in ports. The network will focus on high-emitting materials, mainly metals, plastics, cements and biomaterials. LOOP-Ports project aims to create a network of ports focused on circular economy activities providing knowledge, experiences, best practices, policy recommendations, business models, training and new business opportunities to the port clusters and other related industries.

Their ambition is to develop a new “fifth” transport mode. A wide range of applications for automated freight transport have been studied including: 1. In urban areas. 2. Internal or between industrial complexes, logistical centers, and multi-modal terminals, such as airport and harbor complexes. 3. Collection or long distance transportation of agricultural products, aggregates and solid waste. 4. Inland or cross-country transportation of maritime containers. These new systems can be complementary to or substitute existing transport modes. ISUFT focuses on underground freight transport by automated transportation systems or capsules, moving through underground tunnels or pipelines. The purpose of ISUFT is to present, by organising events like the international symposia, the research progress in developing underground freight and capsuleconcepts.
