The Baan Tawai project is a collaborative effort between North Chiang Mai University and Purdue University to preserve the culture and heritage of the Baan Tawai village in Thailand. In recent years, the village has suffered an economic downturn and its artisans’ talent for woodcarving has gone unrecognized. Baan Tawai, literally the “Village of Giving,” is the cultural heart of Northern Thai woodcarving, acting as a gathering place and commercial center. It was the first of the One Tambon One Product (OTOP) Villages, which specialize in the manufacturing and sale of a single product, and to this day remains the largest in Thailand. The beginnings were fairly inauspicious: craftsmen passing their skills from one generation to the next. Traditionally, men carved their livelihoods out of teak, while the women decorated them with patterns and gold leaf. Then, in the mid-seventies, a handful of woodcarvers began taking their work into town to sell. Soon others followed, and with them came renown that gave them their reputation as a woodcarver’s village. As their fame grew, the need to sell in town dwindled and disappeared, as the craftsmen were able to sell their wares from their homes. For a time, business boomed as people all the way in Bangkok commissioned their works. Today, the village boasts over a thousand households that are divided into a series of districts. In addition to homes and wood shops, the village also includes an ancient temple, a school, and a number of restaurants and coffee shops. Villagers continue keeping the woodcarving tradition alive, creating products that fall into three major categories: Fine Art, Furniture, and Smaller Handicrafts.
