Since the Cold War, our global security environment has become increasingly decentralized, evolved in complexity, and become more “human” than technology-based. The concept of” for the US and of “global security” for the international community have necessarily broadened to adapt to the demands of this new environment. Security no longer centers on a static tension between two large state superpowers. It must now concern it self with weak and corrupt governments, not just strong ones. It must contend with non-state actors and violent extremists who pose a more grave and present danger than any single nation. It must struggle with the fact that genocide and insurgencies are more prominent and more likely than conventional military standoffs, and that transnational criminal enterprises - from drugs to human trafficking - are deeply interconnected with social, economic and political conflicts. It must confront and account for the reality that global climate change, energy crises, shortages of potable water, poverty and hunger threaten lives and challenge development. And it must appreciate that this diverse array of threats is dynamic and transactive. The social /behavioral sciences offer theories and findings that might enhance our understanding of security threats and solutions. They also offer a method of systematic inquiry to develop new platform of knowledge for a more empirically-informed multidisicplinary science of national and global security. It is in the long-term interest of the U.S. and the international community to encourage social/behavioral scientists to engage with each other around global security issues and to connect them with the security enterprise. Shortly following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, eleven professional and technical organizations and federal agencies formed The Infrastructure Security Partnership (TISP) as a non-profit partnership to be a national asset facilitating dialogue on domestic infrastructure security and offering sources of technical support and sources for comment on public policy related to the security of the nation’s built environment. The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides full, merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. "...In January 2008, President George Bush signed National Security Presidential Directive 54/ Homeland Security Presidential Directive 23 — more commonly known as the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI). The CNCI recognizes that cyber security must be elevated to a level of importance on par with an organization’s core functions and missions. It emphasizes that cyber security is a leadership responsibility, not just a function of the Chief Information Officer and information technology staff. And it acknowledges that effective cyber security is multidimensional, multifaceted, and actively involves the entire organization. The Trusted Internet Connections program is the most established piece of the initiative. The Office of Management and Budget developed the program in November 2007 with the goal of decreasing the number of connections from federal agencies to external computer networks to 100 or fewer. Agencies made a 39 percent reduction in the first four months of 2008, from more than 4,300 connections in January to 2,758 in May, according to OMB. The idea is that the fewer connections agencies have, the easier it will be to monitor them and detect security incidents. TIC requires agencies to use the Einstein system to monitor the connections. The automated system, developed by DHS, collects computer security information and then sends it to the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team...[NextGov]" The group's owners are directly involved in helping government agencies correctly implement the requirements specified under CNCI. Thus, information will be posted in this group on a regular basis to help other professionals who are involved or want to become involved in assisting agencies with achieving compliance with CNCI.
