Wayne State University’s Summer Academy in Sustainable Manufacturing (#REUSASM) offers unique summer research experiences in the challenging field of sustainable manufacturing to local and national undergraduate students from two and four-year institutions. This is in response to the urgent need to create effective undergraduate research programs and experienced engineers in sustainable manufacturing, which is vital to the future design and manufacture of materials with minimal environmental, social, and economic impacts. Through advanced research projects, the site will introduce undergraduate students to the forefront of sustainable manufacturing research and provide students with the skills and pathways to pursue four-year and graduate programs so they can become knowledgeable and capable engineers in the manufacturing industry of the future. The site's intellectual focus is in four sustainable manufacturing technical areas: (1) nano-coating and lightweight materials and manufacturing, (2) energy storage materials, batteries, and inversion devices, (3) remanufacturing and sustainability assessment, and (4) chemical-energy-water nexus. Undergraduate research projects within these technical areas cross-cut National Science Foundation (NSF award #1461031) directed research areas, such as material, product, and process design, manufacturing systems, and sustainable engineering.

Bayer Process is refining alumina and aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. This Process dates back to 1888 and was developed by an Austrian chemist named Dr. Karl Josef Bayer. As Bayer Process is capable of producing huge quantities of high purity aluminum hydroxide (abbreviated as hydrate) and aluminum oxide (abbreviated as alumina) at relatively low cost, it is dominant for production of the smelter grade alumina (SGA). Thealumina will be supplied to a wide range ofprocess, collectively called alumina chemicals rather than for smelting into aluminum metal. In order to apply to a wide range of alumina chemicals markets such as detergent, paper, cement, water treatment, refractories, abrasive, polishing, ceramics, glass and fillers for resign, over two hundred (200) different kinds of hydrate and alumina products are produced for a wide variety of end users in CGA refinery.
