The Tocqueville Challenge was developed to encourage young people to play a role in civil society and philanthropy by developing professional skills and deepening their understanding of what civic engagement means to social well being. Professionalism is important to increasing the effectiveness of the sector while inspiring passion for the field by providing a hands-on opportunity to design viable solutions to particular social challenges with a civil society approach. New generations need to be inspired and given the skills to act as citizens, individually and collectively throughout their lifetimes. In the first year Pilot Programme, the Challenge will raise awareness of the connections between civil society and other sectors, facilitating cross-fertilization between business, government, universities, student public service, students and non-profit organizations. The aim is to build strong networks that contribute to the professionalization of the field and more effective approaches to social change. The Challenge will give students a chance to apply theory to practice through civic engagement in ‘real life’ problem solving. This group welcomes participants, partners, mentors and action partners of the Tocqueville Challenge.

Someone’s Daughter is a community based nonprofit 501 c 3 organization founded in 2012 established and directed by a group of women who are primarily concerned with educating and empowering young urban women to strive for success against all odds. Our primary mission is to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged young females in urban communities. Our goal is to advocate for and sponsor programs which assist such individuals in attaining a higher level of economic, social, educational, cultural, and spiritual well being. Our mission is to facilitate social and economic self-sufficiency and to promote citizen civic participation in community development by providing exemplary services in education, employment and career training, social services, health and mental health care, housing and child care that meets the needs of the young females in our community. As an organization, we are convinced that strong families make strong communities. Many of our program activities and services are designed to enhance family life and to contribute to the individual growth and development of individuals. We aggressively develop partnerships with other community and professional organizations in order to enhance our ability to improve all aspects of service delivery of our programs to our young girls, our board and our community. Officially the "Allied War Veterans Council of South Boston" (@SBAWVC) is a 501(c)(19) responsible for organizing and running the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day / Evacuation Day Parade. The City of Boston recognizes the SBAWVC as the organization responsible for the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day / Evacuation Day Parade. The SBAWVC provides assistance to the South Boston Citizens’ Association for their Evacuation Day dedication event on Dorchester Heights, held annually on the 17th of March. The SBAWVC coordinates a mass at St. Augustine’s Chapel and Cemetery preceding the Dorchester Heights exercises. The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council promotes mutual understanding and cooperation among all federal charted veterans’ organizations in South Boston and their respective members regarding all military, social, and civic matters directly affecting veterans, which are not relative to the election or endorsement of a candidate for political office. SBAWVC membership derives from five South Boston veterans’ posts, which are: Thomas J. Fitzgerald VFW Post #561, South Boston VFW Post #5631, Paul J. Saunders American Legion Post #383, Michael J. Perkins Post #67, and Martin F. McDonough American Legion Post #368. Each of these organizations is responsible for maintaining their respective charters as officially recognized VFW or American Legion posts in order to maintain their association with the SBAWVC.

In an era of increasing polarization, we have noticed that other political and women-led clubs on campus lean one way politically, excluding an opposing view.* We are a coalition of ambitious women who seek the amplification of our sister’s voices in politics and law regardless of their party affiliation. Between biweekly meetings, a vibrant social media campaign, and hosting women led political panels, we strive to inform women on important legislation, current events, and promote civil discourse. As we are politically involved members of the SHU community, we have realized the tremendous need for women ledto promote education and civic engagement. What is unique about our coalition of women is that we come from all areas of the political spectrum.
