Nous sommes une équipe de cinq jeunes diplômés ou étudiants du Groupe ISA Lille. Grandement intrigués par les questions européennes et mondiales, nous avons décidé de réaliser un tour d’Europe, d’environ un mois, afin de nous forger un avis sur la situation actuelle de l’agriculture dans chacun des pays visités. Etant destinés à travailler dans les métiers liés à ce secteur, il nous parait important d’acquérir des connaissances sur les différents systèmes d’exploitation et de commercialisation mis en place à l’échelle européenne. Le nom EAT (European Agriculture Tour), se veut simple et accrocheur, il traduit notre intérêt et notre ouverture pour l’agriculture en dehors de nos frontières. Le but de ce projet est de dresser un bilan partiel des secteurs se rapportant à l’agriculture dans les douze pays que comporte notre parcours. Nous souhaitons ainsi avoir une carte d’identité propre à chaque pays mettant en avant les spécificités liées à l’élevage, les grandes cultures, les moyens de commercialisation, la mécanisation et l’importance des énergies vertes. Mais comme toutese doit d’être consommée, nous nous intéresserions aussi aux différents moyens et modes de consommation. Ces différentes observations seront pour nous l’occasion de nous enrichir et de nous ouvrir d’avantage sur le monde agricole qui nous entoure. LeTour nous permettra d’évaluer les rendements dans les principaux pays producteurs avant la récolte. De plus, nous discuterons avec les producteurs afin de connaître leurs ressentis sur l’agriculture de leur pays et les perspectives d’évolutions possibles. Les pays traversés seront : France, Belgique, Allemagne, République Tchèque, Slovaquie, Hongrie, Roumanie, Ukraine, Pologne, Danemark et Hollande. BIMOTEC aims to strengthen buckwheat cultivation in Germany by breeding local varieties that can be planted as second crop in a double crop system to increase agrobiodiversity and climate-resilience and thus stabilize farmers’ yields. Buckwheat is an underutilized crop that is increasingly valued as a healthy, gluten-free pseudo-cereal. Buckwheat grains and residual biomass contain large quantities of industrially valuable secondary metabolites. These phytochemicals have various health-beneficial properties and can be used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. BIMOTEC is focusing on establishment of buckwheat as dual-use crop to leverage both buckwheat grains for foodand residual biomass for the extraction of biobased compounds. Breeding of dual-use plants offers great potential to establish innovative bio-based value chains. To develop climate-resistant local buckwheat varieties, BIMOTEC employs phenotyping, transcriptomics and metabolomics to analyze relevant traits in greenhouse and field experiments. These studies investigate the genotypic variation in buckwheat’s responses to drought and cultivation on marginal soils, aiming to identify favorable phenotypic traits, valuable secondary metabolites and their genetic markers. Field trials and on-farm cultivation of buckwheat play an important role in BIMOTEC aiming to quantify grain yield and quality. Additionally, process-oriented agronomic models are being validated to optimize cultivation practices. Genome editing technologies are being developed to establish and improve agronomically important traits, laying the foundation for future modern breeding initiatives.

HERE ARE SOME NOTES ON MY THOUGHT PROCESS ON THE CURRENT OIL PRICES AND HOW THESE MIGHT IMPACT GLOBAL ECONOMICS: Energy and the changing environment for fossil fuel especially after US turned the equation post drilling Shale based Fuels within the country, thereby turning the complete global dependence on OPEC countries that will possibly have long term implication on the global economy. The crude oil prices falling from almost $115 to < $ 50 or so a barrel. This might even drive the US Drillers out of business! The very people who brought about the paradigm shift as their cost of drilling is high! This will perhaps be the most significant development after the end of cold war and the fall of former Soviet Union and when OPEC countries will no longer dictate the developed the world. Economist say the Arabia might go bankrupt in the long term scenario and Middle East might implode! But on the contrary, the developed and technology exporting economies will also have a setback after OPEC countries will not be able to spend lavishly on importing arms, ammunition, technologies and other consumer goods from the these developed countries, and which was keeping their economies ticking and cash registers ringing. Second impact can be on the Agricultural cashshifting back to grains and away from corn used in producing bio fuel and re strengthen the world food production surplus, possibly driving down the prices and helping the poor worldwide. But as fossil fuels are now cheap and in surplus, efforts in reduction of dependence on fossil fuels to reduce global warning and the carbon foot print of various orthodox technologies will no longer be economically justifiable in the short term and the global warming and environmental pollution might further rises in near future.

Aims: The postgraduate program enables the graduates to understand the theoretical background of sustainable agriculture and familiarize with integrated crop management and organic farming applications, capabilities and limitations. M.Sc. graduates constitute suitable employees in farmer advice/extension, teaching, research institutions, government and international agencies, management companies, aid programs, local authorities and as consultants in the private sector.graduates carry on pursuing further research for a PhD degree. Objectives: to conjugate environmentally friendly scientific advances, trends and applications in agriculture with critical thinking and research hypothesis formulation ability; to provide the tools to measure the impact as well as manage the biotic and abiotic production inputs to farming systems; to introduce the frame of the legal requirements and the methodological approach to certification systems of environmentally friendly, sustainable and safe agrofood production; to analytically present modern and environmentally friendly crop protection approaches in both integrated pest management and organic farming systems; to provide a thorough insight into modern and environmentally sound recycled hydroponics greenhouse production methods. FATIMA addresses effective and efficient monitoring and management of agricultural resources to achieve optimum crop yield and quality in a sustainable environment. It covers both ends of the scale relevant for food production, viz., precision farming and the perspective of a sustainable agriculture in the context of integrated agri-environment management. It aims at developing innovative and new farm capacities that help the intensive farm sector optimize their external input (nutrients, water) management and use, with the vision of bridging sustainablewith fair economic competitiveness. Our comprehensive strategy covers five interconnected levels: a modular technology package (based on the integration of Earth observation and wireless sensor networks into a webGIS), a field work package (exploring options of improving soil and input management), a toolset for multi-actor participatory processes, an integrated multi-scale economic analysis framework, and an umbrella policy analysis set based on indicator, accounting- and footprint approach. FATIMA addresses and works with user communities (farmers, managers, decision makers in the farm and agribusiness sector) at scales ranging from farm, over irrigation scheme or aquifer, to river-basins. It will provide them with maps of fertilizer and water requirements (to feed into precision farming machinery), crop water consumption and a range of further products for sustainable cropping management supported with innovative water-energy footprint frameworks. All information will be integrated in leading edge participatory spatial online decision-support systems. The innovative FATIMA service concept considers the economic, environmental, technical, social, and political dimensions in an integrated way.FATIMA will be implemented and demonstrated in 8 pilot areas representative of key European intensivesystems in Spain, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Turkey.

Agroforestry combines elements of agriculture and forestry in a sustainable production system. Systems either silvoarable (trees & crops) or silvopastoral (trees & animals) which manage rather than reducing complexity for greater functional bio-diversity and production. Careful selection of tree and alleycomponents is required in relation to market outlets, local climate, soil, alley spacing, tree height, planting and harvesting timing, tree leaf production and shading etc. Trees in combination with crops or livestock, given the right design, can provide many benefits - shelter (micro climates), soil stabilisation, increased soil fertility, pollinating and predatory insects, flood attenuation, timber, fruit, nuts - and, of course, enhanced biodiversity and carbon sequestration. Agroforestry UK aims to facilitate information and experiece exchange and develop a number of examples around the country using different systems for different results which will then be templates for other landowners to draw upon.
