It mainly contains acetic acid, butyric acid, catechol, and phenol. Wood vinegar has a compound effect of promoting crop growth similar to plant growth regulators and is environmentally friendly. Moreover, it can enhance the biological and abiotic resistance of crops. Besides, all treatments containing M reduced the incidence of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Peronospora parasitica (downy mildew) in rapeseed. More specifically, the T3 treatment significantly decreased the infection rate of these two diseases mentioned above by an average of 17.33% and 12.14% in two years compared to the CK, respectively. Therefore, the study and application of wood vinegar due to its compound effects on crop growth and yield is of great importance to sustainable agriculture, crop ecology, and environmental protection.

Agroforestry combines elements of agriculture and forestry in a sustainable production system. Systems either silvoarable (trees & crops) or silvopastoral (trees & animals) which manage rather than reducing complexity for greater functional bio-diversity and production. The term “allelopathy” is derived from Greek words allelon and pathos (meaning "mutual harm" or "suffering") and was first used in 1937 by Austrian plant physiologist Hans Molisch. Allelopathy is a phenomenon involving either direct or indirect and either beneficial or adverse effects of a plant (including microorganisms) on another plant through the release of chemicals in the environment. The allelochemicals are released from different plant parts by leaching, root exudation, volatilization, residue decomposition, and other processes in both natural and agricultural systems. Allelochemicals are a subset of secondary metabolites not required for metabolism (growth and development) of the allelopathic organism. Allelopathy is a multidisciplinary field of science, first widely studied in forestry systems. Allelopathy can affect many aspects of plant and soil ecology, including occurrence, growth, plant succession, the structure of plant and microbial communities, dominance, diversity, plant productivity and nutrient transformation. It has been found that allelopathy offers great potential to (a) increase agricultural production (food grains, vegetables, fruits, forestry), (b) to decrease harmful effects of modern agricultural practices [multiple cropping, leaching losses from N fertilizers, indiscriminate use of pesticides (weedicides, fungicides, insecticides, nematicides), tolerant/resistant biotypes in pest] on soil health/ productivity and on environment and (c) to maintain soil productivity and a pollution free environment for our future generations. It is likely that in the near future allelopathy will be used in, crop protection and agroforestry in developed and developing countries. Allelopathy may become one of the strategic sciences to reduce the environmental pollution and to increase agricultural production in Sustainable Agriculture of the 21st Century. Thus, it is now receiving more attention from biological scientists.
