The Southern African Tree Seed Working Group is an independent organisation that aims to bring together all stakeholders with an interest in tree seed - including scientists, managers, foresters and others. The group promotes research, technology transfer, capacity building and safety awareness relating to all aspects of tree seed: from seed orchard establishment and management; through seed harvesting,and processing, to seed utilisation. Some areas of interest include seed genetics; seedmanagement; the impact of pests and diseases; seed use efficiency and the implementation of novel and existing technologies and best practises. The exchange of information on all tree seed related issues is facilitated through working group meetings, newsletters, distribution of published material and by enabling interaction between tree seed users and the tree seed research community. The tree seed working group also has the purpose of promoting seed science to the broader research and forestry communities, particularly highlighting the importance and benefits of quality tree seed.

Pest and disease identification in plants and crops is a common and daily problem faced mostly by farmers, agri-pharmaceutical companies, agricultural field trials companies, researchers and teachers. Plant diseases affect crops all over the world, with critical direct impact onof food and consequently negative impact on the environment and eventually on human well-being trough the use of the wrong pesticide. In the case of farmers the presence of a disease has also a direct impact on business so it should be dealt as soon as possible. Consequently, the first step is to have a proper diagnostic and this may be achieved with the accurate identification of the disease and its causal agent, preferably at an early stage. Diagnostics are sought by farmers either by talking with each others, by calling a specialist or by sending plant samples to certified laboratories for analysis. The first choice doesn’t seem to offer a high degree of success and the other two choices may not be readily available (or not available at all) or take longer than needed. Even in a stage where it might be to late to act on a single plant, at least a promptly diagnostic may prevent spreading and/or future occurrence. In the absence of an in-time and satisfactory answer, the farmer may be tempted to solve the problem by analogy (self diagnostic) and use a pesticide of his choice. The problem is therefore to shorten the response time for a correct diagnostic of plant andpests and diseases by speeding up the process of identification, thus avoiding potential decrease in yield, minimize pesticide use and ultimately to release warnings and prevent regional crop disease outbreaks.
