The Children's Hospitals Neonatal Consortium (CHNC) began in 2006 as a grass-roots initiative to optimize the care of the infants referred to tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at children's hospitals throughout the nation. Led by a multi-disciplinary group including NICU medical directors, nursing leaders, respiratory therapists, and other champions for quality and patient safety, they serve to address the unique needs of infants with conditions that commonly require surgical or pediatric sub-specialty care. In 2008, CHNC partnered with Children's Health Associates (CHA), an alliance of children'sformerly known as the Child Health Corporation of America, to create a comprehensive dataset, the Children'sNeonatal Database (CHND), in order to provide a platform for quality improvement and benchmarking. Since data collection began in 2010, CHNC has grown to include 34 of the leading children'sneonatal ICUs in the US and Canada. In 2017, the hosting of the database has transitioned to Velos, Inc. The CHNC welcomes collaborative relationships with other benchmarking groups.
