Supported by a Developing Your Creative Practice Award from Arts Council England Anna Dumitriu is now undertaking a period of deep research into the barriers that exist within arts institutions against the collection of BioArt, and her aim is to develop ambitious strategies to facilitate its inclusion. She is reaching out to curators, conservators bioartists, art historians and experts to learn more about what you think the issues are. BioArt is an emerging artistic movement where artists work with biological media such as cells or DNA, to explore our relationship to the living world, and the practice of science and healthcare in society. It speaks to issues that directly impact audiences today. BioArt was described by the Art Newspaper as “the new avant-garde” as far back as 2016 but it is still absent from most art collections.view BioArt works as “Unruly Objects” that do not fit with their existing collecting strategies, this means commercial art galleries and private collectors are also unwilling to take risks. This group is founded to in order to create a network of like-minded individuals who are interested in exploring and developing ambitious strategies for encouraging the inclusion of BioArt in art collections and the gallery sector, breaking down barriers and creating new pathways for artists in the field. Another aim is to research specific concerns around the display or storage of biological or organic media (live or dead), the perceived lack of curatorial expertise in the area, understand what makes an artwork ‘collection worthy’, and build capacity in the field. An ultimate aim is to publish a short white paper/manifesto to help improve the situation.

This group is to gather all people interested in creating EDI in the art world, and also to contribute to defining how to certify a contemporary art institution like museums and art collections in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. The Alliance for Professional Development in Museums (Alliance) is the networking face of a Standing Professional Committee connected to the Association of African American Museums (AAAM). In support of AAAM, through advocacy, education, and information, the Alliance promotes “best practices” as a primary means of achieving institutional standards among AAAM members. More so, the Alliance promotes professional development and career training opportunities for those who serve, with a emphasis on the needs of those professionals: (1) who are African American themselves, or (2) who are of whatever ethnicity, serving African American-themed institutions, or (3) who seek to reach African American audience segments at mainstream institutions. The objectives of the Alliance, notwithstanding, ALL are welcome to participate in, contribute to, and take advantage of the group’s offerings.
