Networking group for managers of volunteer programs at Puget Sound area museums

The mission of Museums Alaska is to maintain an association of Alaska's museum professionals and volunteers in order to provide opportunities for improvement of museum and culture center services in Alaska and to enhance public understanding of the purposes and functions of Alaska's museums and culture centers.

On 29 April, for the Europeana Spring Programme, we held a discussion looking to solve how works can remain available for the public even if they are in private hands. Here is the provocation for the talk: " With the risk of objects leaving the public domain, we as an industry need to help save them so that the work is publicly available even after the gavel comes down at an auction. I would like to propose two methods in which digital technology can help with deaccessioning: 1: where possible,should reward private owners who champion making their works available for public display on request. The works may go into private ownership, but by registering them on a database like the one my company manages, Vastari, they can be available for usage in future exhibitions, research projects and displays. 2: can we set a standard for making a digital “twin” of a physical object that stays in the museum collection, long after the physical object may not be. With the technology available today, this digital original can be a valuable asset for research and digital exhibitions. In conclusion, if and when an object need to go “back” to private ownership after deaccession, or when it is unrealistic to have the object on display, the public loses access to it. But that doesn’t mean we cannot have it live on in the service of the public, by being available for loan, research and usage in a physical or a digital format using the tools we now have at our disposal.need to step up now to set those standards, before these objects are lost to the public."
