Improving Firefighter Life Safety to reduce line-of-duty injuries and deaths is the main goal of the Illinois Firefighter Life Safety Task Force (IFLSTF). The primary means to accomplish this is the advancement of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s (NFFF) 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives (FLSI), which were developed at a 2004 Firefighter Life Safety Summit. The Summit, which was hosted by the NFFF, in conjunction with the United States Fire Administration, was an important first step in a major campaign to help reduce firefighter line-of-duty deaths by 25% in 5 years and 50% in 10 years. Though the first milestone has been elusive, by raising awareness of the Initiatives and all doing our part to make them a reality, we can still reach the goals. An affiliate of the Illinois Fire Services Association, IFLSTF has determined that advancement of the FSLI needs to begin with awareness. Following this, the Task Force will aim to provide departments with concrete ways to ingrain the FLSI into the fabric of their organization. Though raising awareness will occur through a variety of means, one way that the IFLSTF has identified to get the Initiatives in front of allis through series of Safety Bulletins that are being distributed via electronic means, the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s portal, email blasts, and limited mailings. Most importantly, distribution will occur through a grass roots effort – if you get it, pass it on! Look for distribution of the Safety Bulletins to begin spring 2010, beginning with an Introductory Bulletin, and followed by a new intitiative each month. The monthly roll-out will be in chronoligical order, starting with FLSI 1, and concluding with FLSI 16. In addition to introducing the initiative, each bulletin will have challenges and actions thatand departments can take to improve safety.

The NFFF was created by the United States Congress to lead a nationwide effort to remember America's fallen. Since 1992, the nonprofit foundation has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers. Now in its eleventh year, the National FallenMemorial Golf Tournament has grown to include over 30 regional golf tournaments held across the country on behalf of the National FallenFoundation. But leaders in the fire services spend less than 20% of their time actually leading in tactical situations. The vast majority of the decisions these leaders make are in the station and the station is where Leaders of Character are needed. The sad truth is the leadership failures - the ones that make headlines and result in massive lawsuits - happen back at the station. This group is dedicated to creating a movement around character. It is unique in that it is written as a result of a widow's experience. Ryan Mergl is a regionally recognized trial attorney who has handled cases in the United States Federal Court and throughout Pennsylvania. These HERO's need specialized treatment and this is a forum for addiction and behavioral health professionals to share and assist in effective treatment for these individuals. Police officers have an extremely difficult job. Not to mention the fact that they are in the public eye all the time. So you can see how alcoholism and substance abuse can be a problem. . Firefighter substance abuse and alcoholism is a major problem in the fire service, with around 33% of the fire service suffering from some form of PTSD from traumatic events they witness on a daily basis. Approximately 52% of PTSD sufferers will go to substance abuse, leaving around 18% of allwith an addiction of some sort. Alcoholism and addiction are common for those who work in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), due to the trauma and stress faced every day on the job.

Physical fitness training is often discussed, usually written about, but very rarely motivated in the fire service; especially the volunteer fire service. There is time and cost constraints with the implementation of a physical fitness program that a lot of fire departments, in particular volunteer fire departments, do not wish to explore. The idea that a team concept may providewith the individual motivation to participate in a physical fitness program may be the best solution to this problem.
