Unite and Inspire. The British Columbia Association of Broadcasters represents private television and radio broadcasters with the mandate to combine the resources and strength of our industry in three key areas: to promote and contribute to community enhancing programs throughout our province, to present a unified and credible voice in matters that affect our growing industry, and to provide our members with information and inspiration through our annual BCAB Conference. Along with radio and television broadcasters, the BCAB also includes associate members from the advertising and business community that contribute to our broadcasting industry. Members of the BCAB can access assistance with provincial regulatory issues, legal issues pertaining to broadcasting, and information and support on their industry related concerns. The BCAB utilizes the many talents, energies and financial contributions of its members to create public service campaigns that promote better communities. The Amber Alert program and the Humanitarian Awards are just two of the many programs assisted by the BCAB. Amber Alert, the voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters, activates an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. The Humanitarian Award was established in 1980 by the BCAB and is presented annually to BC organizations whose projects would benefit from a province wide broadcast campaign.

WHO can participate in this program? The Broadcast Leadership Training program is targeted to senior level broadcast managers of proven ability who aspire to advance as group executives or station owners. It can also help successful entrepreneurs in other industries who wish to make the transition to broadcasting. While no specific prerequisites apply, previous station management or related experience is helpful as is past attendance at other industry management programs. To encourage diversity in broadcasting, NABEF offers fellowship opportunities to women and people of color. WHAT will program participants learn? There are a number of programs that teach broadcasters the fundamentals of management that are common to most businesses. However, there comes a point when rising executives need specific knowledge and skills relevant to owning and operating radio and television stations and group management. Developed with guidance and support from some of the industry's top executives, the Broadcast Leadership Training program focuses on the unique process of assessing, purchasing, owning and operating radio and television stations. It provides a blueprint for talented businesspeople to become a greater part of the industry and increase the diversity of voices available to the public. Faculty are drawn from the ranks of those working professionals most qualified to address individual topics. FCC staff and leading communications attorneys discuss regulatory and legal issues; members of the Wall Street and banking community provide insight into financing arrangements; and leading broadcast executives offer their first-hand perspective on the industry. In some instances, academic faculty from leading universities are on hand to share their expertise. This unique combination of professionals acting as instructors not only imparts a real-world perspective to the program, it also allows participants to build the network of contacts they need to succeed.

A group for the current and past members of the CommLaw Conspectus: Journal of Communications Law and Policy and The Catholic University of America. Conspectus is a student-edited, scholarly law journal devoted to communications law and policy issues. The two-issue volume, published in the late spring/early summer, contains lead articles written by professionals in the communications law industry and student comments. The content includes a book review, bibliography of current communications law treatises, and digests of major FCC actions and court decisions involving communications law issues. The Conspectus serves the communications law community by presenting major developments that occur in the publication year in the areas of cable television, broadcasting, international communications, private radio, telecommunications, First Amendment law, copyright, and antitrust. Students attain membership on the Conspectus staff by demonstrating superior writing skills in the closed-packet writing competition held each year. American Women in Radio & Television is a national non-profit organization working with professional women and men in the electronic media and allied fields. Our goal is to promote the entry, development and advancement of women in broadcasting and their image as depicted in radio and television.

The Film, Television, and Media department offers a comprehensive instructional program in cinema, broadcasting, and streaming. The department provides a wide range of technologies for our students such as 6K camera systems, multiple track field audio, professional software such as, Pro-Tools and DaVinci Resolve, access to a state-of-the-art Television and Radio Studio via KVCR, and we still teach Film on Film with our two film cameras a 35mm and a Super 16mm. The department boasts a wide variety of academic paths to follow, which include multiple 2-year degrees with transfer options and professional development certificates geared towards specific areas of film and broadcast, such as production, postproduction, and audio. Through the Institute of Media Arts, students can take advantage of career development services such as portfolio development, resume writing, networking skills, and internships through our partnerships across southern California. These partnerships offer both unpaid and paid internship opportunities. Our most prominent partner is right on our campus, KVCR Television and Radio.

KZME radio serves music lovers, artists and the music community everywhere by celebrating Portland and the greater Northwest’s local creative culture. KZME is a nonprofit, commercial-free radio station dedicated to local music, arts and culture. We are the only FM radio station in Portland dedicated to local music. KZME plays music not already well represented on the local dial. KZME goes on the air in the fall of 2010, broadcasting on 107.1 FM in Portland and 91.1 FM from Mt. Hood. In anticipation of our launch we produce podcasts, cable television programs, and sponsor community events. KZME is operated by MetroEast Community Media on a non-commercial, educational license issued by the FCC. The broadcast area reaches over 700,000 households in Portland and surrounding areas as well as streaming live globally on the internet. KZME’s target demographic is 18-45 year-olds who support local music, art and culture in the Pacific Northwest. ¬ KZME is supported by listeners, business partners, special events and grants. Funds are used to acquire and operate a state of the art broadcasting facility dedicated to promotion of music and information about local arts and culture.
