ENORASI project (36-months, started on the 18th of July 2018) aims to develop a wearable system offering accessibility and guidance to open environments of high cultural and tourist value, providing a unique user experience, especially visually-impaired users. The system uses sensors like cameras, microphones, immersive user interfaces etc. enabling user’s localisation in an area of interest, recognition of his/her environment, objects of cultural/tourist interest, obstacles or dangerous situations around. It provides directions both for navigation and guided touring. The system also provides a capability for its guided users to share their experiences with other remotely located people, including people with motility disabilities, elderly etc. This is achieved through an advanced telecommunication infrastructure that enables highly efficient wireless connections with cloud services, used for the transmission of info acquired from wearable sensors to other mobile or stationary media players. The system includes: a) Augmented Vision, with stereoscopic capabilities, for depth sensing, through cameras embedded in user’s eyeglasses b) speech interaction using microphone(s) and earphones embedded in user’s eyeglasses without affecting any ambient sounds c) communication with mobile processing units (MPU) such as mobile devices for visually impaired. The processing and analysis of the acquired data is performed partially in the MPU, while the more complex computational processes are performed in the cloud environment. The scientific contributions for the development of the proposed system focus are mainly focused on novel image/video and audio/speech processing and analysis methods and applications. We analyse user experiences in interest areas visited by users. Such an information can be used e.g. by tourist service providers to enhance their services and extend to new regions.
