CORESI operates Waste Center which receives FS as well as SW, from anyone to deliver and pay a dumping fee and (b) their own vehicles which will mainly aim to serve institutions. While “dry organic waste” will already be processed at the briquette production unit at the market, the Waste Center will receive a mix of wet organic waste and dry inorganic waste, which can include also valuable material such as metals or hard plastics. Hopefully a way can be found to separate the wet organic and the dry inorganic at source (e.g. through providing sacks), if not then the waste will have to be sorted/sieved at the site. Valuable material shall be retrieved from the mix and could be either sold to the “recycling vendors” in the area or in the next city for a higher profit margin. Wet organic waste together with the processed FS will be used for vermi-composting. Whatever cannot be re-sold or composted will be land-filled incl. fine particles or caveras. The high-quality vermi-compost shall then be sold. Even the worms used for vermi-composting could be a source of income since the supply in-country is very limited. 4 people (excluding the manager) will operate the waste site. Besides salaries, running cost will include water and power, but eventually also spare parts. Dry organic waste (maize cobs, coffee husks, groundnut shells etc.) will be collected in sacks/bins handed out to respective vendors at the market and eventually also collected from households/farms. It is estimated that an amount of 80 kg of briquettes can be produced per day. To save transport cost, the briquette production unit will be set up directly at the market but is centrally managed from the Waste Center. 3 people will operate the briquette production unit. Besides salaries, running cost will include water, power, binding material, packages for the briquettes and transport in case of collection from the households.
